WHEN HUMANS OBSERVED something extremely outside the bounds of what they’d imagined, their thoughts stopped. In the same way, when an AI observed something extremely outside of their theorized reality, an error occurred, sending the algorithms of their consciousness into disarray.

Vivy certainly hadn’t expected to find what she did on the observation deck.

“Vivy…?” Estella’s eyes widened when she turned to find Vivy, frozen in place.

Arnold’s arms were still around Estella, and he looked equally shocked.

“What is it?” asked Estella. “This isn’t your station right now…”

“Uhhh, no, it’s, uh… I couldn’t contact you, Estella,” Vivy said clumsily.

Estella’s expression immediately changed, and she stepped away from Arnold, looking far more managerial as she moved over to Vivy. “Oh! I’m sorry. I cut off transmission for just a short time. Is there a problem?”

Vivy held up her hands and shook her head. “No, there isn’t a problem. I just didn’t know where you were.”

“And you came to the observation deck to check? Well…I’m glad there isn’t anything wrong, and I’m sorry I didn’t say anything. I wanted to devote my attention to Mr. Corvick for a short time.”

Vivy was glad Estella wasn’t blaming her, but she was confused about the explanation. She wanted to spend time alone with Arnold on the observation deck? Did that mean…?

“So, Vivy, could you please leave? Just for now?” Estella said, trying to gently shoo her away.

“It’s fine, Estella. Vivy is staff, right? She’s got the right to celebrate with us,” Arnold told her.

“If you say so…”

Vivy had started to think there was some sort of disquieting relationship between the human and the AI, so she found his suggestion completely incomprehensible. “What are you two doing here? The observation deck isn’t opening for another hour…”

“We’re waiting for it to open, obviously. Although I might’ve used my position as the owner to get the jump on the rest of the guests,” Arnold admitted. Then he held a finger up to his lips, like it was a secret, and winked.

Vivy didn’t pick up on anything suspicious from either of them, or anything to make her think she really had seen something she wasn’t supposed to. But there was an unexpected degree of closeness between Estella and Arnold.

“It’s the grand opening of Sunrise and the opening of the first-ever space observation deck… Mr. Corvick and I just wanted to see it together and share a moment for my former owner, Ash Corvick,” Estella said.

“Stop calling him your former owner, Estella. He’s still your real owner. That hasn’t changed. I’m fine being just a decoration—an owner in name only for both you and the hotel.”

“You’re so generous, Mr. Corvick.” Estella’s expression softened, and she smiled as Arnold gave a friendly chuckle.

Witnessing them together, Vivy was certain there was a strong bond between Arnold and Estella, a relationship she wouldn’t be able to get between. There was nothing there that might drive Estella to an evil act.

Besides, something Arnold said had caught her attention.

“What do you mean you’re fine being the hotel’s owner in name only?”

“Ah, that.
